In 2003 I moved to Redditch for/with my partner and have been here ever since. The soil type and conditions in Redditch are very different to ones found in Lichfield/Cannock to which it didn’t take me long to realise why the area is called ‘Red Ditch.’
To date, I have been undertaking landscaping work for clients in and around Redditch, pleasing all who I have had the pleasure to work for. I look forward to adding to my long list of satisfied customers over the next several years. . . . . . . . . . .
I, Stephen “Bruce” Purnell, have been landscaping since 1987. After leaving school I worked for John Browns Nurseries near Lichfield. This is where I obtained my nickname “Bruce”. Long story... Anyway, I realised I loved landscaping and wished to progress.
After 18 months at John Browns Nurseries I attended Pershore College Of Horticulture to further myself and obtain a qualification in landscaping. The course started in Sept ‘89 and after 3 years I completed the course attaining a National Diploma in Landscape Technology.
Part of the curricula in the 3rd year was to exhibit in the rock garden section at the Chelsea Flower Show. Prior to 1992 Pershore College had never obtained Gold. However we, the N.D. 3rd year Landscape Technology students, not only obtained Gold for our garden called ‘The Greening of Industry’, but we were also awarded the ‘Fiskars Sword of Excellence’ for the best exhibit in the whole of the show.

Not So Proud Moment
After Leaving College I worked for a landscaping company in Wolverhampton for 3½ years. Unfortunate story that resulted in the birth of my company, Advanscape, in Jan 1997. Never looked back.
In 1999 a colleague, Mike Nicholson from The Garden Studio, and myself entered a garden into BBC Gardeners World at the NEC. For our efforts we achieved Silver Medal for the garden we called ‘Very Moorish’.
From Between 2000 and 2006 I have not only continued completing work for private clients but I have also been completing, or helping to complete, garden builds for several BBC gardening programmes. The BBC Programmes I have worked on include ‘Real Rakeovers’, ‘Real Wrecks’, ‘The Weekend Gardener’, several series of ‘Housecall’, ‘The Million Pound Makeover Property Experiment’ amongst others. As a result I have worked with quite a few celebs including, Andy Sturgeon, Tommy Walsh, Chris Beardshaw, Colin & Justin, Suzi Perry, Diarmuid Gavin, Lowri Turner and Craig Phillips (BB1).
